Badgers' secondary aims to rewrite turnover narrative
Wisconsin head coach Jack Cooper says the Badgers' secondary is entering the 2026 season with a clearer identity and deeper chemistry than a year ago. After a campaign that yielded only six takeaways and a last‑place national ranking in that metric, the staff has focused on building trust among the players and aligning their roles with the scheme.
Leadership anchors the secondary
At the heart of the group is senior safety Matt Jung, who in his first year as a starter logged 628 defensive snaps and made eight starts. Cooper describes Jung as the undisputed leader, noting his experience and ability to anchor the unit.
Raphael Dunn, a transfer from Lawrenceville (N.J.), has settled into a permanent nickel spot after bouncing between positions last year. The coaching staff credits his improved football IQ and the confidence that comes from a defined role.
Resilience and role evolution
Marvin Burks Jr., a Missouri transfer with SEC starting experience, brings resilience and a proven track record of leadership in the secondary. His presence is seen as a stabilising force for younger teammates. Cairo Skanes, who shifted from cornerback to safety, is emerging as a key rotational piece, leveraging his ball‑skill set to create opportunities.
Depth and trust in the system
The depth chart also includes Iowa State transfer Carson Van Dinter and former Neenah high school standout Grant Dean, adding versatility to the unit. Cooper stresses that the defense must trust the system and leverage its strengths to generate turnovers rather than play conservatively.
