Utah’s College Football Fandom: Who Leads the Pack?

Age, faith and politics shape allegiances to Utah, BYU and Utah State

College football in Utah is dominated by three institutions, but the landscape is far from uniform. The University of Utah, Brigham Young University (BYU) and Utah State University each command sizable followings, yet the distribution of fans reveals striking nuances.

Overall, 36% of Utahns name the University of Utah as their primary team, making it the clear leader. BYU follows with 29% support, while Utah State garners 13%. The remaining share is split among other programs and casual supporters.

The Numbers Behind the Rivalry

The rivalry between the Utes and the Cougars is among the most fervent in the nation, especially during game weeks when stadiums fill with passionate fans. This intensity is reflected in the demographic splits that emerge when examining age, religion and political affiliation.

Age plays a decisive role. Younger and older fans alike tend to back BYU, whereas middle‑aged supporters favor the University of Utah. Gen Z respondents prefer BYU by a 36% to 27% margin, while Baby Boomers tilt toward BYU (32%) over Utah State (27%) and Utah (16%).

Generational differences become sharper among Gen X, where 56% back the University of Utah, compared with only 19% for BYU. Millennials are more evenly divided, with 40% supporting Utah and 30% favoring BYU.

Gender also matters, as men are more likely than women to champion the Utes. Among Christian residents, the split is nearly even between BYU and Utah, each attracting 37% of that group, while Utah State draws 11%. Non‑Protestant and Catholic Utahns lean heavily toward BYU (48%), whereas those who identify as agnostic or non‑religious favor Utah (60%).

Religious identity sharpens the picture further. Half of Latter‑day Saints support BYU, while a quarter back the University of Utah. Political orientation adds another layer: Democrats in Utah lean toward the Utes, Republicans toward BYU, and independents tilt toward Utah.

Election results reinforce these trends. Among those who voted for Kamala Harris in 2024, 47% favor the University of Utah versus 20% for BYU. Conversely, 35% of Trump voters support BYU, while 29% back Utah. These alignments illustrate how deeply intertwined sports loyalty is with broader cultural currents.

Despite the clear leaders, the state hosts seven football‑playing schools, and Utah State, though less popular, remains a notable presence. The ongoing rivalry ensures that each matchup carries weight, keeping fan engagement high across the Beehive State.
