The Sandy Valley Cardinals are gearing up for a 2026 campaign that could finally break the cycle of disappointment that defined their 2025 season. After finishing winless at 0‑10, the program is hopeful that a blend of experience and fresh talent will translate into tangible progress on the gridiron.
A New Era on the Sideline
First‑year head coach Torrance Carle has taken the reins from Brian Gamble, who now serves as an assistant at GlenOak. Carle brings a fresh perspective and a clear vision for a team that struggled with inexperience a year ago.
Among the returning lettermen are Aiden Barfield, Bo Bernower, Chace Debellis, Caleb Duebner, Caden Long, Natch Overly, Kage Stout and Mason Vickers. Of those, Duebner, Bernower and Chase Helwig have emerged as the primary targets in the passing game, giving the offense a reliable set of go‑to receivers.
Quarterback Liam Fetty, who burst onto the scene as a freshman with more than 1,000 passing yards and five touchdowns, is expected to anchor the offense. His growth entering his sophomore year could be the catalyst that lifts the entire unit.
Natch Overly, who missed half of the 2025 schedule due to injury, is slated to see increased action at both running back and defensive back. Coach Carle has highlighted his versatility as a key piece of the puzzle.
Freshman Brody Merrick, returning from his own injury, is expected to contribute at running back, on the offensive line and as a linebacker. His multi‑position skill set adds depth and flexibility to the roster.
Local Battles and Home Field Shifts
The schedule features familiar foes, with Week 2 bringing a showdown against Norton and a pivotal matchup against Malvern in Week 5. All home games will be played at venues including Fairless, Minerva, East Canton, Malvern, Garaway, Ridgewood and Tuskytown, giving the Cardinals a chance to build momentum in front of local fans.
With a junior class that has now accumulated valuable varsity experience, the coaching staff believes the team has a stronger foundation heading into the new season. If the early signs hold, the Cardinals could finally translate their potential into wins.
