Roxana/EA-WR Youth Soccer Camp Fuels Community Growth Ahead of World Cup

Three days of coaching, mentorship and collaboration bring 174 youngsters together in Illinois

The Roxana/EA-WR Youth Soccer Camp took place from August 3 to 5 at Norman Lewis Field, where 174 youngsters ranging from second to eighth grade took part in a three‑day soccer experience.

A Community-Driven Initiative

Camp organizers structured the event around warm‑ups and four coaching stations, each staffed by high school players who guided children by grade level. The setup not only provided hands‑on instruction but also fostered a sense of mentorship among the participants.

Tyler Lafferty, the Roxana High boys soccer coach and assistant director of Wood River Parks and Recreation, spearheaded the camp after previously coaching at Civic Memorial High. His dual role reflects a broader commitment to expanding youth soccer opportunities across Roxana, East Alton and Wood River.

Building a Soccer Culture

The camp’s success was credited to the collaboration of Roxana High coaches, local youth club mentors and the high school volunteers. With the upcoming World Cup generating heightened interest, Lafferty plans to offer free clinics this season and to lay the groundwork for additional youth soccer programs that will sustain the sport’s growth in the community.
