Jiovanni Fontan Takes the Helm of Goshen College Women’s Basketball

New coach aims to build culture, boost attendance and honor the program’s legacy

A Fresh Coaching Vision at Goshen College

Jiovanni Fontan has been appointed as the new head coach of the Goshen College women’s basketball program, succeeding Tyra Carver after her successful tenure that laid a strong foundation for the team.

Fontan arrives with a diverse coaching résumé that includes eleven years at the high school level, most recently at DePaul Catholic High School, as well as professional playing experience in Uruguay and Puerto Rico before returning to the sidelines.

He previously played college basketball at Fordham University and the University of Southern California, where his teams earned NCAA tournament berths, and he now brings that competitive background to Goshen.

Jomani Thomas will continue to serve as an assistant coach, providing continuity for the players as Fontan implements his vision of hard work, community support, and a winning environment.

Athletic director Dwight Gingerich praised Fontan’s skills and enthusiasm, highlighting the excitement surrounding the new leadership.

Fontan expressed particular enthusiasm about coaching at a faith‑based institution, noting that the college’s values align with his own approach to developing student‑athletes.

The new staff aims to increase attendance, foster pride among players, and create a product that reflects both Goshen College’s traditions and the athletes’ aspirations.
