With the first week of the schedule looming, UCLA’s football program has released its projected starting lineup, painting a picture of a team that blends proven experience with promising new talent. The excitement surrounding the squad stems from a mix of returning starters and high‑profile transfers who are expected to shore up last season’s weaknesses.
At the heart of the offense, quarterback Nico Iamaleava will take the snap after a turbulent previous campaign, but the addition of experienced backs and reliable receivers should give him the stability he needs to rebound. Running back Wayne Knight will lead the ground game, while Jaivian Thomas and Anthony Woods are slated to provide depth and versatility.
Projected Offensive Starters
The receiving corps is anchored by Landon Ellis, Brian Rowe Jr., and Mikey Matthews, a trio that has already built chemistry with the quarterback and coach Bob Chesney. At tight end, Josh Phifer and Brayden Loftin are the top contenders, with Phifer favored for his blocking prowess and connection with Iamaleava.
Protecting the quarterback will be a revamped line. Jordan Davis, who excelled at South Alabama, is projected at left tackle, while Eugene Brooks returns to bolster the left guard spot. Riley Robell has locked down the center position, and Carter Sweazie is expected to start at right guard, though Julian Armella and Brooks remain viable alternatives. Hall Schmidt, a transfer from Boise State, is set to man right tackle after impressing in spring and fall camps.
Defensive Front and Backfield
On defense, the edge will be manned by Sahir West and Aiden Gobaira, who are projected to start at defensive end, while Scott Taylor offers depth. The interior line will feature Darold DeNgohe and Tyson Ford, with Maxwell Roy and Ameir Washington providing backup support.
At linebacker, Sammy Omosigho is slated to start at middle linebacker, with Jalen Woods as his primary backup. The secondary will be anchored by DJ Barksdale, Rodrick Pleasant, and Dante Lovett, who are expected to form the starting cornerback trio. In the backfield, Cole Martin will play strong safety alongside Tao Johnson, who will start at free safety, creating one of the team’s most formidable defensive pairings.
