The WKU Hilltoppers are set to begin their 2026 season on the road, traveling to Terre Haute to meet Indiana State University on August 16 at noon Central Time. This encounter marks the third meeting between the programs, with WKU holding a 2‑0 advantage in the series.
The Hilltoppers enter the new campaign after a dominant 2025 season that culminated in a Conference USA regular‑season championship and an unbeaten 6‑0‑2 record within the league. Their defense, which limited opponents to just 0.86 goals per game, ranked second in the league, while the attack was bolstered by a fresh influx of talent.
Head coach Jason Neidell, now in his 26th year at the helm, earned Coach of the Year honors last season and continues to shape a squad that blends experience with youthful energy. Returning standouts include midfielder Georgia Liapis, the 2025 CUSA Midfielder of the Year, and forward Makenna Egan, the Freshman of the Year who contributed five goals a year ago.
The team opened the season with a 0‑0 draw against Missouri, a game in which goalkeeper Mia Riddick recorded her first career shutout. In exhibition play, WKU routed Murray State 4‑1, spreading the scoring across four different players and hinting at a deep attacking options.
Indiana State, meanwhile, began its own season with a 3‑0 victory over Western Illinois, showcasing a potent offense led by Riley Mathews, Alex Lehnert and Quinn Urquhart. Lehnert, who topped the Sycamores with nine goals last season, will be a key adversary for the Hilltoppers’ backline.
