Iowa's football program announced on Wednesday that third‑year defensive back Kyler Gerardy has been sidelined by an injury that could keep him out for the remainder of the 2026 season.
The setback follows a similar injury to Lance Beeghley, a transfer receiver from SMU who suffered a setback about a week earlier and is projected to miss substantial time, if not the entire campaign.
Coach's Assessment
Coach Kirk Ferentz addressed the developments during a media day press conference, noting that the injuries are part of a broader list of camp‑related issues facing the Hawkeyes.
Gerardy entered the previous season with limited playing time, recording 29 defensive snaps and five special‑teams snaps across four games, and he logged his first career solo tackle in Iowa's 37‑0 shutout of Wisconsin.
Beeghley's high school résumé was equally impressive; he finished with nearly 2,500 career receiving yards, 62 catches for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns, setting multiple school records.
Both players also bring family ties to the sport — Beeghley's father, James Beeghley, played collegiately at Oklahoma State University.
Ferentz indicated that the coaching staff will need to reshuffle the depth chart, giving younger athletes an opportunity to step into larger roles.
