A preseason football showdown between Hernando High School and Sunlake turned into a sudden stoppage when a brawl erupted in the fourth quarter, cutting the game short after Hernando held a slim 15‑14 lead.
The clash began after a series of late penalties were called against Hernando, prompting players from both squads to converge near the goal line, where pushing, shoving and even helmet‑swinging erupted, forcing officials to intervene.
The scuffle erupted just as sophomore running back Javarioun Frazier had put Hernando ahead with a 37‑yard touchdown run, and moments earlier junior linebacker Mason Pauliot had scored a 48‑yard interception return for a pick‑six, highlighting the team’s early promise.
The fight that halted the game
Head coach Wyndell ‘Chop’ Alexander later described the incident as ‘getting dirty’ and stressed that he did not want the melee to define the program’s trajectory.
Senior quarterback Waylon Williamson, who inherited the starting role after Michael Saltsman’s graduation, managed six rushes for 26 yards without a completed pass before the game was halted.
Although the contest was only a preseason affair and therefore excluded from official records, the early performances gave Hernando a glimpse of a potentially explosive offense heading into the regular season, which opens on August 21 with a road trip to Lake Brantley.
