Fundraising surpasses $3 million as local player Carter Sanderson and Hall of Famer Brian Rafalski highlight the facility’s year‑round impact on central South Dakota hockey

A New Ice Era for Central South Dakota

The Oahe Hockey Association has been working since 2022 to transform its Ice Barn into a state‑of‑the‑art facility that can maintain ice year‑round. The renovation, which includes upgrades to refrigeration and seating, is designed to host competitive matches and provide a consistent training environment for local talent.

Fundraising efforts have exceeded $3 million, covering the first two phases of the project and bringing the expansion close to completion. Organizers are now seeking additional contributions to finalize the third phase and to sustain the facility’s operations.

Carter Sanderson, a former Oahe Capitals standout who was later drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins, addressed the recent fundraiser. He spoke about how the new ice surface would have changed his development path, emphasizing the importance of having a reliable place to train regardless of weather.

Hall of Famer Brian Rafalski, a U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, was also present at the event. Rafalski shared his perspective on the evolution of the game and praised the association’s commitment to nurturing talent through improved infrastructure.

Nick Marso, a key figure in the project, outlined the remaining fundraising goals and encouraged community members to support the initiative. He highlighted that the completed expansion will not only benefit elite players but also provide recreational opportunities for youth across the region.

The finished Ice Barn will operate 365 days a year, allowing athletes to train and compete at any time. This capability is expected to strengthen the local hockey ecosystem, attract regional tournaments, and foster a deeper talent pool in central South Dakota.
