The University at Albany men's basketball program recently organized a citywide scavenger hunt designed to help a wave of international newcomers settle into Albany and bond with their teammates.
A Citywide Quest for Connection
Coach Dwayne Killings, who leads the team often referred to as the Danes, explained that the activity was part of a broader effort called Danes of Greatness, a name, image and likeness collective that seeks to extend players' awareness beyond the campus borders.
Eleven fresh faces from countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Croatia, Senegal and Qatar joined the returning roster, prompting the staff to devise a fun, interactive way to introduce them to local landmarks such as the New York State Museum, the Empire State Plaza and the historic State Capitol.
Participants were split into small teams of five, each tasked with locating specific sites like the Corning Tower observation deck, the Albany Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the iconic Washington Park, while snapping photos and checking off items on a playful checklist.
The competition concluded with one team earning a lighthearted prize: a pass on sprints during an upcoming practice, a reward that underscored the event's emphasis on camaraderie over pure athletic performance.
Beyond the playful challenges, Coach Killings highlighted the importance of familiarizing the players with the city's cultural fabric, noting that a sense of place can enhance both personal well‑being and on‑court chemistry.
The scavenger hunt not only served as an ice‑breaker for the diverse group but also reinforced the program's commitment to community engagement, illustrating how sport can act as a bridge between campus life and the surrounding city.
