The Woodmore boys soccer program emerged from a two‑year hiatus ready to test itself against the varsity schedule that had once felt foreign. Head coach Peyton Sorg admitted that the first weeks back were marked by a steep learning curve, as the team adjusted to the speed and intensity of high‑school competition.
A Quiet Comeback
Last season ended with a solitary win and ten losses in an independent conference, a record that underscored the program’s struggles. Graduations stripped the roster of four key contributors — Andrew Drill, Brandon Kayser, Landyn Sipe and Rylan Vinson — leaving a void that the returning seven starters must now help fill.
Among those returning are senior leaders Colton Roy and Blake Avers, who are expected to anchor the side both on and off the pitch. Ryne Donley, the team’s top scorer from the previous campaign, will again lead the attack, while sophomore goalkeeper Jack Avers returns taller and more confident after a five‑inch growth spurt during the offseason.
The offseason saw the squad participate in a summer league, a deliberate move to build chemistry and restore confidence. Freshmen Michael Sievert and Lincoln Rohrbacher have earned early playing time, adding youthful energy to a group that also welcomes back sophomore midfielder David Kigar and junior midfielder Greg Gonzalez.
Coach Sorg emphasized that the immediate goal is not just to win games but to foster an environment where players feel comfortable, enjoy the sport, and develop lasting cohesion. With a blend of seasoned seniors and promising newcomers, Woodmore hopes to transform past hardships into a springboard for a more competitive future.
