Eligibility Granted After Legal Ruling
Tae Marrero Jr., a standout punt returner for the Southern Illinois University Salukis, will suit up for the 2026 season after the university announced that he has been granted a fifth year of eligibility. The decision follows a recent U.S. district court ruling that cleared the path for the senior to extend his collegiate career.
Marrero will continue to wear jersey number 10, a number that has become synonymous with his electrifying returns. His reputation as one of the most dangerous punt returners in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) is reinforced by his placement third in the league for both return yards and average, sitting at 17 yards per attempt.
A New Chapter with Jersey No. 10
During the 2025 campaign, Marrero logged 10 punt returns for a total of 170 yards, highlighted by an 81‑yard dash against Northern Iowa on October 25 and a touchdown return against North Dakota on October 18. He was also one of three Salukis to bring a punt back for a score that season.
Beyond special teams, Marrero contributed as a receiver, tying for fifth in the conference with 105 receiving yards and a touchdown across 11 games. His dual‑threat ability adds depth to the Salukis’ offense as they look to build on recent successes.
The return of Marrero not only bolsters the team’s special‑teams unit but also signals a continued commitment to developing talent within the program. Fans can expect to see the dynamic playmaker back on the field, aiming to add another chapter to his already impressive résumé.
