Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) revealed this week that its women's soccer program will be suspended for the upcoming fall 2026 season. The decision follows a painstaking assessment of player numbers and recruitment pipelines that simply could not meet the program's historic standards.
A Program Built on Excellence
Over the past eight years the women's team captured five national rankings and secured eight consecutive Golden Valley Conference titles. Its reputation for athletic excellence and for shepherding players into four‑year institutions made the program a cornerstone of the college's sports identity.
The recent roster struggled to attract new talent, a trend that officials attribute to demographic shifts in the South Lake Tahoe region and increasing competition from neighboring institutions. As a result, the college determined that continuing the program without a viable roster was no longer sustainable.
Men's Soccer Continues, Leadership Changes Follow
While the women's side will pause, the men's soccer team will take the field in 2026 under head coach Carlos Trujeque Leal. The program remains fully operational and is expected to carry forward the college's competitive spirit.
The announcement also coincided with the resignation of Athletic Director Steve Doten, effective August 6. Doten's departure, officials said, was unrelated to the program suspension and part of a broader administrative transition.
Looking Toward 2027
LTCC has pledged to rebuild the women's soccer program for the fall 2027 season, aiming to restore its former prominence. Former head coach Jeremy Evans, who recently accepted a position at the University of Nevada, expressed disappointment at the decision but remains hopeful that the program will emerge stronger after a period of reflection and strategic planning.
