Duo Strategy Drives the Plan
Michigan State’s football program entered the 2026 season with a clear blueprint: address the pass rush and secondary shortcomings that plagued the previous year by leveraging three strategic duos across key positions.
Edge Rush: New Faces, Old Expectations
At the edge of the defensive line, veteran Anelu Lafaele returns after a injury-plagued stint at Wisconsin, while linebacker-turned-rush end Kenny Soares Jr. has been handed the coveted No. 1 jersey despite a modest 3.0 career sack total.
Their combined presence is expected to lift a pass rush that managed only 22 sacks last season, a figure that ranked near the bottom of the Big Ten and left the team without any player surpassing 2.5 sacks.
Secondary Overhaul: Transfers Step In
In the secondary, transfers Charles Brantley and Tre Bell are slated to replace departing cornerbacks, bringing experience from Miami (FL) and Iowa State respectively. Brantley, who redshirted after arriving from Miami, and Bell, who logged interceptions for the Cyclones, aim to stabilize a unit that allowed 231.3 passing yards per game.
Running Back Leadership and Depth
The backfield also sees a boost from Cam Edwards, who topped the roster with 1,240 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns last year, and emerging sophomore Marvis Parrish, whose physical development has been highlighted by coach Pat Fitzgerald during fall camp.
Fitzgerald noted Parrish’s improved conditioning and trajectory, suggesting the duo could provide the depth needed to sustain a more balanced offensive attack.
Looking Ahead
Overall, the coaching staff believes that the synergy of these position groups will not only mend the defensive lapses but also create new opportunities on offense, positioning the Spartans for a competitive campaign in the upcoming schedule.
