A strategic hire for a championship‑hungry program
UConn’s men’s basketball program announced the appointment of Charlie Stevens as its new general manager, bringing a blend of NBA front‑office experience and grassroots scouting expertise to the role.
Stevens, a Bronx native who captained Clark University for two seasons before joining the San Antonio Spurs in 2021, spent five years rising through the franchise’s basketball operations, scouting and player‑engagement departments, and was most recently promoted to director of grassroots scouting.
His arrival follows the retirement of Tom Moore, who held the GM position for a single year before stepping down at age 61, and will see Stevens oversee name, image and likeness initiatives as well as the increasingly complex transfer portal landscape.
The move underscores a deepening partnership between UConn and the Spurs, a relationship highlighted by the recent drafting of Stephon Castle and Tarris Reed Jr., both of whom contributed to the Huskies’ run of three straight national championship games.
UConn coach Dan Hurley praised the hire, noting Stevens’s familiarity with elite talent pipelines and his ability to navigate the modern college‑basketball ecosystem, while fans anticipate a fresh approach to roster building and compliance.
