The Campbell women's soccer team opened its home season with a 3-1 loss to Appalachian State on Tuesday night, slipping to a 1-1 record in the process.
The first half was tightly contested, but the Mountaineers broke the deadlock in the 48th minute, taking a 1-0 lead that carried into the break.
Second Half Surge
Campbell answered quickly, with Laney Heafner finding the net in the 54th minute after a pass from Abby Connolly and Ava Kanaar, leveling the score before App State struck again just two minutes later.
A third goal in the 64th minute sealed a 3-1 final, even though the Camels outshot the Mountaineers 16-14 and earned five corners to four.
Key contributors for Campbell included Heafner and Connolly, who each registered multiple shots on goal, while goalkeeper Anaïs van Doesburg made three saves against 16 attempts.
The Camels will look to rebound when they travel to face East Carolina on Thursday night at Johnson Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. and a live stream on ESPN+.
