Virginia Tech crushes VMI 6-0 in season-opening soccer showdown

The Hokies' offense overwhelms the Keydets as freshman goalkeeper Makena Corcoran makes her mark

A dominant performance

Virginia Tech's women's soccer squad traveled to Blacksburg's Thompson Field and delivered a 6‑0 victory over VMI, marking the first meeting between the programs since 2004 and improving the Hokies' all‑time series record to 2‑0.

The breakthrough came early when striker Anna Weir found the net in the 34th minute, giving the Hokies a 1‑0 lead. Virginia Tech continued to press, adding two more goals before halftime and extending the advantage to 3‑0 just 23 seconds after the break, with Johannah Bradley on the scoresheet.

The second half saw the Hokies dominate possession, firing 43 shot attempts while VMI struggled to create chances. Eliana Salama capped the scoring with a goal in the 76th minute, while freshman goalkeeper Makena Corcoran, who replaced Maren Ryberg in the final 17 minutes, recorded a single save.

VMI's net‑minder Ryberg made 10 saves before being substituted, and the Keydets' attack was limited to a handful of attempts from Bailey Reid, Jordan Davis and Samantha Uschold. The team will next head to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to face Winthrop University on Thursday night.
