Austin Peay State University’s soccer squad, known as the Governors, opened their season with a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tennessee Tech. The match took place on a crisp evening, and the Governors entered with hopes of building momentum after a promising start.
A Defensive Masterclass
The Governors managed eight attempts on goal, but only two found the target, highlighting the stingy defending of the Golden Eagles. Junior defender Lindsey Arnold contributed two shots, one of which was on goal, while Kiley Reese, Allie Williams and Makai King each played the full 90 minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Waskiewicz turned in a career‑high five saves, including a crucial stop on a shot from Tori Soutuyo in the first half and another from Iris Cotteleer moments later. Her performance kept the Governors within striking distance throughout the contest.
The deadlock was broken early in the second half when Halle Bibee struck, sending the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0. The goal came after a flurry of chances that saw Tennessee Tech’s Drew Tolley make early saves, including a stop on a Kiley Reese effort.
Waskiewicz’s heroics continued, denying a Kayla Childs strike in the 47th minute and later confronting a Kylie Brandes shot at the 58th minute, but the Governors could not find an equaliser. The match concluded with Tennessee Tech preserving a clean sheet.
Looking ahead, Austin Peay will travel to Edwardsville, Illinois, on Thursday, August 20, for a 7 p.m. kickoff against SIUE, hoping to rebound from the early setback and climb back into contention.
