Forge Christian High School’s girls soccer team captured the 2024 Colorado 2A state championship, defeating undefeated Buena Vista 2‑0 in a match that will be remembered for its drama and resilience.
A Lightning Delay Tests the Team
A sudden lightning strike forced a 30‑minute delay, pausing the action just as the game was entering its second half. Coach Nick Arter gathered the players and guided them through a brief exercise of sharing what they were grateful for, a simple practice that helped refocus the squad.
When the whistle blew again, junior forward Kali Knight seized the moment, striking a surprising shot from an unexpected angle that found the net with 26.5 minutes remaining. Her goal, the first of the season for Knight, broke the deadlock and shifted the balance of the game.
Senior Emily Gilbert extended the lead seven minutes later, adding an insurance goal that put the outcome beyond reach. Goalie Rio Beck, who had been flawless throughout the postseason, kept a clean sheet, his steady presence anchoring a defense that never relented.
The victory marks Forge’s fourth state title in girls soccer, the first since 2008, and underscores a culture built on discipline, teamwork, and the ability to thrive under pressure. The team’s strong defense and collective spirit were the cornerstones of their success.
