A new era for Friars hockey
Matt Kelly stepped down after eight years at the helm of Providence College’s women’s ice hockey program, a tenure that produced a 136‑109‑27 record and a single NCAA Tournament appearance.
The college immediately named Nicole Norton, who has served as an assistant for the past five seasons, as interim head coach. Norton’s fingerprints are evident in the Friars’ recent resurgence, including a Hockey East Championship and multiple playoff runs, as well as the development of standout players such as Brooke Becker and Reichen Kirchmair.
Norton’s interim leadership
Norton’s deep familiarity with the roster and recruiting network has allowed her to maintain continuity while the program transitions, ensuring that the team’s competitive edge remains intact.
Providence College has announced that a national search for a permanent head coach will commence following the conclusion of the 2026‑27 season, giving the program time to transition while preserving its upward trajectory.
Burt’s new responsibilities
Alongside Norton, goaltending stalwart Katie Burt was elevated to interim associate head coach. Burt brings a wealth of experience from her collegiate career at Boston College, where she backstopped the Eagles to a national title and amassed 121 wins and 3,180 saves, and she has already mentored rising talent like Hope Walinski, who set a program record for saves.
Looking ahead
The moves signal a strategic continuity: Norton’s intimate knowledge of the squad and Burt’s elite playing background aim to preserve the program’s momentum as it prepares for the next chapter, with fans and alumni responding positively to the interim leadership.
