The University of Georgia’s men’s basketball team is set to reshape its frontcourt after the departure of center Somto Cyril, who transferred to Miami, and will lean on a trio of newcomers to bolster defensive intensity.
Coach Mike White, now in his second season at the helm, says the arrival of Ole Miss transfer James Scott, along with Andrew Osasui and David Ugonna Ike, is designed to plug the gaps left by Cyril and to raise the Bulldogs’ defensive rating.
White highlighted Scott’s athleticism and versatility, noting that the 6‑foot‑9 forward averaged 3.9 points and 4.6 rebounds at Ole Miss while also ranking among the team’s leaders in blocks.
Joining Scott, Osasui brings a shot‑blocking pedigree that placed him fourth in the Atlantic 10 last season with 55 rejections, while Ike adds size and experience that the coaching staff believes will extend the team’s press and half‑court pressure.
Defensive Vision Takes Shape
The Bulldogs will return four starters from last year’s lineup — Smurf Millender, Blue Cain, Kanon Catchings and Kareem Stagg — giving the new big men a familiar supporting cast as they integrate into the rotation.
Former SEC Player of the Year Ron Slay praised Scott’s defensive skill set, saying his ability to protect the rim will be crucial as the team looks to improve on a defensive rating that placed them 89th nationally and 12th in the SEC last year.
White emphasized that the added size and depth will allow the Bulldogs to switch more fluidly on ball‑screen actions and to blitz opponents more aggressively, aiming for a more cohesive defensive identity.
With the new roster chemistry still developing, the Bulldogs hope the defensive upgrades will translate into more wins as they navigate a challenging schedule.
