The Louisville Cardinals' defense is poised for a rebound after finishing the previous season among the nation’s top twenty in both yards per game and yards per play.
A Revamped Coaching Landscape
After a season marred by injuries, the defensive staff has been reshaped, with Mark Ivey and Steve Ellis stepping in as coordinators to bring fresh schemes and continuity.
Stanquan Clark, who missed much of the prior campaign due to injury, returns as the anchor of the linebacker corps. His experience and ability to disrupt the run have already been highlighted by a 7.5‑tackle‑for‑loss tally from the previous year.
Alongside Clark, TJ Capers showed promise as a part‑time starter, posting eight tackles and three tackles for loss, while Antonio Watts emerged as the defense’s most exciting prospect, recording two sacks, two forced fumbles and 6.5 tackles for loss.
The departure of TJ Quinn leaves a void in veteran leadership, but the unit has responded by deepening its roster through recruiting. Cam White, Trent Carter and Jacob Smith will provide backup at linebacker, while Caleb Matelau, Ben Perry and Blake Ruffin add versatility in the secondary.
