Xavier University of Louisiana announced this week that Tyrone Mitchell will assume the role of head coach for the men's basketball program, succeeding a tenure that has already redefined the Gold Rush's competitive standing.
A Decade of Building Success
Mitchell arrived at Xavier in 2015 and has since been instrumental in cultivating a culture of excellence. Under his guidance the program amassed 182 victories, posted a .679 winning percentage and logged six 20‑win seasons. The team also captured three conference tournament titles in 2020, 2021 and 2023, and secured first‑round wins in the NAIA National Championship Tournament for three straight years.
Before stepping into the head‑coach position, Mitchell served as co‑head coach alongside Alfred Williams during the 2025–26 season, a partnership that highlighted his ability to collaborate while still driving results. His playing days as a point guard at Northwestern State University from 2002–06 laid a foundation of leadership, a stint that culminated in his induction into the Northwestern State N‑Club Hall of Fame in 2025.
Leadership Voices
Curtis Wright, Vice President for Student Affairs, praised Mitchell’s dedication to student‑athletes and his capacity to represent Xavier with distinction. Pat Kendrick, Executive Director of University Athletics and Recreation, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing Mitchell’s longstanding commitment to the program and his vision for raising its standards.
Mitchell’s coaching philosophy centers on preparation, discipline and the development of champions both on the court and in the classroom. He stresses academic achievement and personal growth as integral components of success, a stance that aligns with Xavier’s broader mission.
Looking Ahead
As the new head coach, Mitchell plans to build on the existing foundation of Xavier basketball, honoring past achievements while setting higher benchmarks for future seasons. His vision includes continued recruitment excellence, player development and maintaining the program’s upward trajectory.
