Michigan State University has appointed Dan Bartholomae as its new athletic director, tasking him with reigniting a football program that has struggled to compete at the top of the Big Ten. Bartholomae, who spent several years at Western Michigan University, arrives with a proven record of boosting fundraising and securing major investments.
His immediate priority is a comprehensive strategic plan that will guide the department for the next 12 to 54 months. The plan emphasizes transparency, honesty and close collaboration with university leadership and the donor community, aiming to align athletic ambitions with the broader goals of the institution.
Strategic vision and fundraising
Bartholomae’s fundraising achievements at Western Michigan are notable: annual giving surged by 473 percent and the number of unique donors rose by 105 percent during his tenure. He also helped the Broncos capture the 2023 MAC football title and secured $515 million in funding for a new basketball and hockey arena slated to open in 2027.
At Michigan State, the financial landscape underscores the challenge. The football budget for the current season exceeds $20 million, placing the program behind five other Big Ten peers that spend over $30 million, while traditional powerhouses such as Ohio State and Oregon reportedly invest more than $40 million annually.
Facility ambitions and budget context
The university’s Board of Trustees has already approved a $500 million renovation of Spartan Stadium, signaling a long‑term commitment to modernizing the venue. The project will be financed through a combination of university funds and private contributions, a strategy Bartholomae is expected to help steer.
President Kevin Guskiewicz, who had briefly considered a move to Clemson, decided to remain at MSU, reinforcing continuity in university leadership. His decision was welcomed by campus stakeholders who view stability as essential as the athletic department embarks on its ambitious roadmap.

Pat Fitzgerald, the head coach of the football team, expressed enthusiasm for Bartholomae’s potential impact, particularly in strengthening donor relations and providing the resources needed to sustain growth. Fitzgerald believes the new strategic direction could finally position the Spartans for championship contention in the Big Ten.
