A Roster Move That Raises Questions
Nebraska announced the dismissal of running back Tikey Hayes on Tuesday, a move that comes just weeks before the Cornhuskers' season‑opening test against Ohio on September 5.
Hayes had joined the program in the summer after a brief stint at Iowa Western Community College and a prior commitment to Penn State out of Aliquippa High School in Pennsylvania. He was viewed as a late‑season addition to fill the void left by Emmett Johnson, who had also been sidelined earlier in the roster shuffle.
During preseason workouts, Hayes lined up with the top offensive units and took carries alongside teammates Mekhi Nelson, Isaiah Mozee and Jamal Rule, giving the coaching staff a glimpse of his potential impact.
His departure leaves the Husker backfield thinner, forcing the staff to rely more heavily on the remaining backs as they prepare for the first test against the Buckeyes.
Coach Scott Frost’s staff has not released a detailed explanation, but the decision underscores the competitive nature of roster management as the team finalizes its game plan.
