Jake Heaps, a former college quarterback who once threw for over 5,200 yards in his collegiate career, now finds himself at the center of a controversy at Legend High School in Colorado.
Suspension and Playoff Eligibility
The Colorado High School Activities Association announced a two‑game suspension for Heaps during the regular season and barred him from any postseason participation should the Titans advance to the state playoffs.
Despite the disciplinary action, the program remains stacked with talent, including star wide receiver Kellen Marchand, who last season amassed 734 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, as well as defensive standouts Freddie Burke, Braylon Aukland and Carter Berard.
A year ago the Titans posted a 10‑2 record, only to see their championship hopes dissolve in the state quarterfinals against Valor Christian, a game that hinged on a failed two‑point conversion.
Under Heaps’ guidance the offense posted 551 points in the 2025 season, underscoring the offensive firepower that could propel the team deep into the tournament.
A Coach’s Journey
Heaps’ football résumé reads like a road map of experiences: he played at BYU, Kansas and Miami before a brief stint in the NFL with the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks, later serving as quarterback coach for Russell Wilson before returning to the high‑school ranks.
Title Contention Outlook
The Titans are slated to face formidable opponents such as Valor Christian, Castle View and Arapahoe in the final stretch, a schedule that could test their depth but also provide a platform to claim the Class 5A state crown.
With a blend of seasoned veterans and dynamic playmakers, Legend aims to translate its regular‑season success into a championship, even as Heaps serves his suspension.
