Will Schwarz, the newly appointed head coach of Frankfort High School’s football program, resigned less than two weeks before the 2026 season was set to begin, leaving the Panthers without a leader on the sidelines.
Schwarz had been hired over the summer, but his tenure never progressed to an actual game, and the abrupt departure caught both players and staff off guard.
Interim Leadership in Place
Ed Schindler, who retired after the previous season, has been tapped to replace Schwarz, bringing decades of experience that include a 21‑year stint that produced a 166‑69 record.
Micah Gallegos, the athletic director for Frankfort‑Elberta Area Schools, confirmed the leadership change in a press statement, emphasizing the district’s commitment to maintaining stability for its student‑athletes.
In the interim, assistant coaches, including veteran Matt Stapleton, will collaborate to guide the team through the transition, ensuring that practice sessions and game preparations continue without interruption.
Stapleton, who previously led the Panthers for 21 seasons and amassed a 166‑69 record, will serve as interim head coach while the district searches for a permanent replacement.
The school district highlighted the dedication of its coaching staff, noting that the collective effort is aimed at preserving the program’s momentum and providing a successful season for the young athletes.
