The Road to the 2028 Olympics
Rhode Island has become the 24th state to approve girls flag football as a varsity sport for the 2026‑27 school year, a move that signals an accelerating push to formalize the game at the high school level.
The Rhode Island Interscholastic League announced that the inaugural state championship will be held in spring 2027, joining a growing list of competitions that culminate in the 2026 NFL FLAG Championships, where the Girls High School Championship attracted more than 1.1 million viewers.
The surge in popularity is not confined to Rhode Island. Sixteen additional states are running pilot programs, and the New England Patriots have been among the most vocal supporters, helping to fund club teams and expand participation across the Northeast. Nationwide, over 400 collegiate clubs now field flag football squads, a testament to the sport’s rapid adoption.
Collegiate governing bodies are responding in kind. The NAIA will stage its first women’s flag football championship in spring 2027, while the NJCAA plans a championship in 2028. The NCAA is set to vote in January 2027 on a National Collegiate Championship, and has already approved funding for the event, aiming for a debut in 2028.
Professional ambitions are also taking shape. TMRW Sports, the league founded by former NFL players, will launch a men’s and women’s pro circuit before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Flag football will make its Olympic debut during the first week of the Games, with six of the twelve national teams earning spots through the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.
The convergence of high school, collegiate and professional milestones reflects a broader cultural shift toward gender‑inclusive athletics, with stakeholders from state athletic associations to international federations collaborating to embed flag football into the global sporting landscape.
