A Homecoming for a Hawkeye Legend
Luka Garza, a former Iowa basketball standout, returned to Upper Iowa University this summer to run a basketball camp for aspiring players, giving the community a chance to see the champion in a familiar setting.
The camp allowed Garza to step away from the relentless demands of his NBA career and reconnect with the fans and mentors who first nurtured his talent.
Growing up in Washington, D.C., Garza dreamed of becoming a star on his own terms, and he often recalled how the encouragement from Iowa’s basketball community helped turn that childhood vision into reality.
On the court, he demonstrated the same post moves that propelled him from a four‑star recruit to the nation’s top player, showing campers the footwork, patience, and confidence that defined his rise.
His professional journey took him to Detroit, Minnesota and Boston, where he posted a career‑best 8.1 points per game in 2026 and took pride in wearing the Celtics jersey.
Though not a native Iowan, Garza said the state’s basketball culture left an indelible mark on him, shaping both his work ethic and his identity as a player.
He closed the camp by thanking the university and the local fans, emphasizing that the relationships he built there will remain a cornerstone of his personal and professional life.
