Community rallies to refurbish Lannan Park
Volunteers and neighborhood groups have launched a coordinated campaign to breathe new life into Lannan Park, a beloved gathering spot in Louisville’s Portland district. The initiative targets the Portland Youth League’s aging baseball infrastructure, aiming to have the fields ready for the spring season.
The upgrade plan calls for cleaning and repairing dugouts, installing brighter lighting, reinforcing bleachers, re‑surfacing T‑ball fields and upgrading the perimeter fencing. A local business, Shirley’s Way, has also pledged to outfit the concession stand with a new refrigerator and ice machine, enhancing the game‑day experience for families.
Key contributors
Joey Hightower, president of the Portland Youth League, grew up playing at the park and now oversees the restoration effort. He emphasizes that a safe, well‑maintained field is more than a venue; it is a cornerstone for neighborhood pride and youth development.
Mike Mulrooney, representing Shirley’s Way, says the equipment donation reflects the company’s long‑standing commitment to community health and recreation. His contribution ensures that players and spectators alike can enjoy fresh, properly stored refreshments during games.
With roughly 130 children already registered, the league hopes to sponsor up to 150 youngsters this spring, turning the renovated park into a model of community‑driven sport. Organizers envision Lannan Park becoming a focal point where families gather, friendships form, and the spirit of baseball fuels neighborhood revitalization.
