Rain‑Soaked Overtime Thriller Ends in Victory
Fossil Ridge High School captured its second straight Class 5A girls soccer championship on Tuesday, edging Mountain Vista 2‑1 in a dramatic overtime finish that left spectators drenched and exhilarated.
The winning moment arrived with just five seconds left on the clock, when Reese Morgan slipped a precise strike past the Mountain Vista keeper to seal the title. The goal was set up by Becca Burke, whose cross from the left flank found Morgan at the back post.
Fossil Ridge had opened the scoring early, with Burke striking in the second minute to put her team ahead. The lead held for much of the first half despite a steady drizzle that turned the pitch into a slick arena.
Mountain Vista answered in the 56th minute, converting a penalty kick by Emersyn Linder to level the contest. The match remained evenly contested, with both sides battling the elements and each other.
Throughout the game, Fossil Ridge controlled possession, orchestrated by a midfield quartet of Kennedy Lindsey, Kaylee Smith and Cassie Maroni, while forward Avery Beer and Harper Hofmeir added relentless pressure. Goalkeeper Olivia Rice made a series of crucial saves to preserve the lead.
Coach Cyrus Salehi praised his squad’s grit and resilience, noting that the team’s ability to stay focused under rain‑soaked conditions was the hallmark of their championship spirit.
The victory also underscored the depth of talent on the roster, with contributions from Mia Lorenzen, Kylie Kephart, Molly Gaffney and Emi Marlow, all of whom played pivotal roles in the team’s campaign.
With the championship secured, Fossil Ridge looks ahead to next season with optimism, hoping to build on the chemistry and determination that have defined their recent successes.
