A Legacy of Perseverance
Esteban Cardoso, a senior at DeKalb High School, was presented with the 2026 Christopher Anderson Memorial scholarship, a $1,800 tribute that honors a graduating soccer player who reflects the late athlete’s commitment to perseverance, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Cardoso earned All‑Conference honors after four seasons with the varsity squad, during which he demonstrated consistent skill and a collaborative spirit that coaches say set him apart.
Coach PJ Hamilton described Cardoso as a natural leader who remains composed under pressure, noting that his selflessness and work ethic have made him a role model for younger teammates.
Beyond the pitch, Cardoso balances rigorous academics, part‑time employment and a vibrant social life, displaying a maturity that exceeds his years.
He intends to enroll at Kishwaukee College to pursue a degree in construction trades, a path he hopes will allow him to apply the same discipline he has shown on the field to his future career.
The scholarship fund, administered by the DeKalb County Community Foundation, has expanded through generous contributions from Anderson’s family and the broader DeKalb community, ensuring that his legacy continues to support aspiring athletes.
