Alan Jones has been a constant presence on the youth soccer sidelines of Kansas City since 1989, shaping the development of thousands of young players over nearly four decades.
A Coach Who Changed the Game
During his 36‑year affiliation with Challenger Sports, Jones helped the organization become a national conduit for aspiring coaches, bringing its camps to every corner of the United States and Canada and reaching a peak of 120,000 participants in a single season.
The Kansas City metro area, now dotted with modern turf fields and expansive complexes, reflects the city’s emergence as a hub for youth soccer, a transformation Jones contributed to through his relentless coaching philosophy and community engagement.
In 2016, a local under‑9 team he guided captured a national championship, featuring future Sporting Kansas City defenders Matt Besler and Seth Sinovic; both have since become icons of the region, with Besler anchoring the 2013 MLS Cup‑winning side and the 2014 U.S. World Cup roster.
Beyond the trophies, Jones praises Besler as a role model, noting that the example set by his former charges continues to inspire the next generation of players who see Kansas City as a fertile ground for talent.
