B.J. Payne Joins Massillon Tiger Hall of Fame

A look back at a high school legend’s playing days and coaching legacy

B.J. Payne, a name that resonates through the halls of Massillon High School, was celebrated recently as he entered the Massillon Tiger Football Hall of Fame.

During his junior and senior seasons in the early 1990s, Payne anchored the Tigers' defense as a standout defensive lineman, helping the team to memorable victories over rivals such as Alliance and Bloomington South.

From High School Star to College Champion

After graduating, Payne continued his football journey at Mount Union College, where he was part of a dominant Raiders squad that captured three Division III national titles, finishing with a staggering 54‑1 record.

His collegiate success paved the way for a brief stint in professional wrestling before he turned to coaching, first at Lexington and later at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Coaching Milestones

From 2006 to 2011, Payne led the Lexington program to a 37‑26 record, a period highlighted by multiple Coach of the Year honors.

In 2012 he took the helm at Hilton Head Island, where over fourteen seasons he compiled a 83‑65 record and earned South Carolina’s Class AAAA Coach of the Year in 2015, an award also recognized by the Carolina Panthers.

More recently, Payne guided his teams to a 9‑3 finish in 2024 and an 11‑2 season in 2025, the latter ending in a state playoff loss but cementing his reputation as a consistent winner.

The induction ceremony not only honored Payne’s playing days but also underscored his lasting impact on the sport across Ohio and beyond.
