Bob Fehrenbach, who spent nearly three decades at the helm of the MacArthur High School football program, announced his resignation during the team's first practice of the season, catching players and staff off guard.
A Sudden Departure
In a brief address to the squad, Fehrenbach said the loss of a daily connection with students and school life had eroded the enthusiasm that once defined his coaching, making the decision to step down inevitable.
His tenure was marked by two Nassau Conference II championships in 2002 and 2019, as well as a Long Island Class II title in 2002 and another in 2015, compiling a record of 147 wins, 92 losses and two ties.
Three assistants — Steve Fazzolari, Tommy Bobal and Ryan Cunningham — will oversee Tuesday’s practice while the school searches for a permanent replacement.
The district has been without a director of athletics since John Coscia resigned in June, leaving the football program without a clear administrative anchor.
Community Reaction
Longtime colleague Jay Hegi described Fehrenbach as one of the most beloved coaches in the county, and many parents and alumni expressed disappointment that a figure who had shaped generations of players would leave so abruptly.
Fehrenbach, who has lived on Long Island since 1991, said he plans to devote more time to his wife Nancy, daughters Kayla and Brianna, and his newborn grandson, prioritizing family over the sidelines.
His departure underscores a broader trend of coaches stepping away when the personal cost outweighs the professional reward, a pattern that resonates across suburban sports programs.
