Bronx Triumphs on the Field
The annual CityParks Play Battle of the Boroughs unfolded on August 14, 2024 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, drawing 142 children from every corner of New York City.
In the 12‑and‑under bracket the Bronx emerged victorious, while Staten Island edged Queens North in a penalty shoot‑out to claim the nine‑and‑under crown.
The competition spanned 41 matches over four hours, interspersed with games of Jenga and a mural that paid tribute to each borough’s iconic landmarks.
CityParks Play, backed by Nike, offers free summer soccer for ages six to twelve across eleven city parks, this year welcoming more than a thousand participants — a record turnout that underscores rising demand.
Program director Jonathan Gamberg praised the youngsters’ hard work and camaraderie, noting that the tournament is as much about dedication as it is about competition.
Girls Forward’s Call for Inclusive Play
The event also featured a showcase by Girls Forward, an all‑girls soccer initiative for ages thirteen to sixteen, which highlighted the program’s focus on social‑emotional growth and leadership.
Coach Rachel Ford of Girls Forward pointed to the persistent gender gap in sports, while coach Molly Cohen described the safe space the program creates for girls to develop confidence on the pitch.
Participant Valerie Zuluaga echoed the sentiment, calling the tournament a supportive community, and Ximena Linton, the program’s director, called for additional sponsors and volunteers to expand access for low‑income families.
Beyond the scores, organizers acknowledge ongoing challenges — limited field availability, funding constraints, and the need to broaden inclusive opportunities, especially for girls.
The tournament served as a vivid reminder that expanding equitable access to sport remains a priority for New York City’s diverse neighborhoods.
