Defensive Masterclass Fuels Aces’ Ascent
Brielle LaBerge, a junior defender for the University of Evansville, was crowned the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week after a commanding display in the team’s 1‑1 draw with Purdue.
The match, played at Purdue’s home ground in West Lafayette, saw LaBerge log every minute of the 90‑minute contest, shutting down the Boilermakers’ attack and restricting them to a single goal. Her defensive discipline was a key factor in Evansville’s ability to secure a rare point on the road.
This performance marks the second time in as many seasons that the Aces have edged out Purdue, and it represents the program’s first victory ever in West Lafayette. The result underscores the growing competitiveness of Evansville’s women’s soccer program on a national stage.
LaBerge’s sophomore campaign in 2025 was nothing short of breakout. She started all 16 games, amassed 1,422 of a possible 1,440 minutes, and ranked second in the MVC with five assists while topping the conference in assists per game at 0.31. She also contributed a goal and eight points, earning All‑MVC Third Team honors.
Looking ahead, the Aces are set to host SEMO at Arad McCutchan Stadium on Thursday, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. The home opener will give fans a chance to see LaBerge’s defensive prowess in front of a live audience as the team aims to build on its early‑season momentum.
