The University of Miami’s football program is gearing up for the 2026 season with a sense of anticipation that stretches beyond the usual preseason buzz. At the heart of the conversation are two standout players who have already begun to reshape the team’s dynamics.
D'Shawntae Jones, a running back who last season reduced his weight from 248 to 225 pounds, is focused on enhancing explosiveness and power. He finished his redshirt freshman year with seven touchdowns and is working to turn long‑range threats into reality, even aiming to hit the goalpost from 30 yards out.
Adding to the excitement is Rodney Nelson, a transfer from Monmouth who arrives with a proven track record of production. In 2024 he amassed 1,802 yards and 18 touchdowns, including three 200‑yard games, earning him the CAA Offensive Player of the Year honor in 2025. His versatility and speed are expected to diversify the offense.
Veteran presence also comes from Cade Yacamelli, a redshirt senior whose blend of physicality, blocking skill and receiving ability makes him a Swiss‑army knife in the backfield. His experience and willingness to contribute in multiple roles should provide the offense with a reliable go‑to option.
A New Era of Offense
Practice sessions have already offered glimpses of the offense’s potential. A 70‑yard strike from Thomas Gotkowski to Scoop Smith lit up the field, while David McComb connected with Maleek Huggins for another big play. These moments underscore the chemistry forming among the skill positions.
On the defensive side, redshirt junior Bai Jobe’s fumble recovery during a drill highlighted the unit’s hustle and willingness to make big plays when the opportunity arises.
Looking ahead, the team is scheduled to hold its next practice on Wednesday, August 19, and will host a community event called "Kickoff With the Community" on Saturday, August 22, at Yager Stadium.
