A Promising Start to the 2026 Season
Claire Nieroda, a sophomore forward for the SIUE women's soccer team, was recognized as the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week after a standout opening week that saw the Cougars open their campaign with a win and a tie.
The team began with a 2‑1 victory over Alabama A&M, a match in which Nieroda opened the scoring with a penalty kick and later set up the game‑winning goal for Carson Bohnenstiehl. Her contributions helped secure the win and highlighted her role as a playmaker.
A few days later the Cougars faced Valparaiso and settled for a 2‑2 draw. Nieroda's assist on Zeniyah Russell's first career goal proved crucial, and she again found the net in the dying moments, her strike coming with just 10.1 seconds left to force an equaliser.
Beyond the scoresheet, Nieroda logged a team‑leading seven shots across the two fixtures, underscoring her constant threat in attack. Her seven shots, one goal and three assists contributed directly to four of the team's five goals during the week.
The Cougars, now sitting at a 1‑0‑1 record, are set to host Austin Peay at Korte Stadium on Thursday evening, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. The upcoming match will test whether Nieroda can continue her early‑season momentum.
Coach praised the sophomore's impact, noting that her vision and composure under pressure have already made her a central figure in the squad's offensive strategy.
