Panthers Set to Launch 2026 Campaign Against Omaha

Returning stars and fresh faces aim to sustain momentum after a breakthrough season

The Eastern Illinois Panthers will begin their 2026 men’s soccer campaign on Thursday, August 20 at 7:30 p.m., hosting Omaha at Caniglia Field in Charleston, Illinois.

Head coach Ruy Vaz enters his second year at the helm, looking to build on an 8‑8‑3 record from 2025 that included a 5‑3‑1 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play.

The lineup will be anchored by senior forward Gui Gragnano, who contributed four goals last season despite injury setbacks, and junior forward Adam Boykin, who ranked second on the team with 14 shots on goal.

Midfielder Yui Nakamura, a 2025 first‑team All‑OVC selection, returns after logging 1,510 minutes and dishing out two assists, providing experience and creativity in the middle.

Goalkeeper Lucas Ortiz, a redshirt junior, took over the starting role mid‑season and finished with a 1.22 goals‑against average and two shutouts, giving the defense a reliable last line.

Twelve newcomers will join the roster, among them forward Keidin Green, who earned first‑team All‑Cascade Collegiate Conference honors at the College of Idaho, and Carmelo Bello, a second‑team NJCCA All‑America selection from Monroe University.

The Panthers will navigate a 10‑match OVC schedule, facing three conference opponents twice and four foes once, before the league tournament runs from November 8‑14 at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.

A New Era of Momentum

The season opener also marks the first meeting with Omaha since 2022, a series that has historically favored the opposition, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the early‑season test.

With a blend of proven returnees, impactful newcomers and a coaching staff eager to capitalize on last year’s progress, Eastern Illinois hopes to translate its offseason gains into a strong start on the field.
