Gull Lake Community Schools announced on August 12 that it would cancel the Blue Devils varsity football season, citing safety concerns, dwindling participation and competitive imbalances that made a full schedule untenable.
The decision came after the district opened multiple Title IX investigations into alleged hazing incidents that occurred during a preseason camp, with officials saying that reports of inappropriate behavior by team members prompted a thorough review.
Hazing Allegations Spark Title IX Review
Board President Carole Mendez described the situation as “very difficult,” acknowledging the disappointment felt by students and parents while emphasizing the district’s commitment to student safety and due process.
Parchment High School’s athletic director, Brennan Davis, proposed an emergency cooperative agreement that would allow 10 to 18 Gull Lake varsity players to practice and compete under the Parchment banner, pending approval from the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
Exploring a Cooperative Solution
The Gull Lake Board of Trustees gave initial support to the co‑op arrangement, but the final green light depends on MHSAA endorsement and compliance with state regulations.
Criminal Investigation Continues
Separately, Michigan State Police are conducting a criminal investigation into the hazing allegations, a probe that remains ongoing and distinct from the district’s Title IX inquiries, which are still gathering evidence.
Community forums have highlighted frustration over the lack of detailed information shared with the public, with parents demanding transparency about the investigation’s status and the criteria for any future athletic participation.
If the cooperative plan receives clearance, the participating students would be eligible to play this season, potentially mitigating the impact of the cancellation on their athletic development.
