A Legendary Life
Willie Akers, an 89‑year‑old former West Virginia University basketball player and longtime coach in Logan County, died on August 18, 2026, in Logan, W.Va., after months of declining health.
Born in the coal‑rich hills of Mullens, Akers first made his mark at Mullens High School, where he earned all‑state honors for his scoring and rebounding prowess.
He then attended West Virginia University from 1958 to 1960, contributing to a Mountaineers team that compiled an 81‑12 record, captured three Southern Conference Tournament titles and earned three NCAA tournament berths.
During his college career he amassed 669 points and 573 rebounds in 93 games, a performance that earned him a spot on the Southern Conference All‑Tournament Team in 1960.
Akers subsequently turned professional, playing two seasons with the Cleveland Pipers of the American Basketball Association before returning to his home state to share his knowledge as a coach.
From 1970 onward he led Logan High School to four Class 3A championships, a feat that cemented his reputation as one of the most successful coaches in West Virginia high school basketball history.
Beyond the sidelines, Akers served in various administrative capacities within Logan County Schools, helping to shape the region’s athletic programs for future generations.
His contributions were recognized repeatedly: he was inducted into the West Virginia State Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1991, the Logan Hall of Fame in 1994 and the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. In 1991 he also received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the WVU College of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences.
Willie Akers is survived by his wife, two sons and four grandchildren, who will carry forward the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to sport, education and community.
