The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is poised to transform its athletic infrastructure with a $5.723 million investment in a new soccer and track‑and‑field complex. The project, initially estimated at $2.5 million in 2021, now reflects a more than two‑fold increase in scope and ambition.
A Multi‑Source Funding Model
Funding for the facility draws from several streams, including allocations from Jefferson County, Title III grants, private donations, university reserves and federal grants. Private contributions and university reserves together cover 62 percent of the budget, while federal grants account for the remaining 38 percent, illustrating a collaborative financing approach.
From Modest Estimate to Ambitious Goal
The jump from a $2.5 million projection to a $5.723 million plan underscores the growing demand for expanded athletic offerings at the campus. The increased budget supports not only the soccer field but also a full‑size track, lighting, bleachers, a scoreboard, concession stand, restrooms and locker rooms.
A Timeline Marked in Stone
Construction is slated to begin immediately after the full Arkansas Legislative Council gives its final approval, which is expected on August 21. Project leaders have set a completion date of November 30, 2027, positioning the facility to be ready for the upcoming athletic seasons.
Embedding the Facility in Campus Life
The complex will rise near the Johnny B. Johnson Housing Complex, just north of the current sports venues. While the university’s home soccer matches will continue to be held at Pumphrey Field on University Drive, track and field practices will take place at Pine Bluff High School until the new site is ready for use.
Contract Award Signals New Direction
After negotiations with Nabholz Construction stalled, the University of Arkansas System board cleared the way for UAPB to contract with Tarkett Sports Construction. The move signals a shift in partnership strategy and sets the stage for a timely start to ground‑breaking work.
