The Martin County Fair's 3‑on‑3 Basketball Tournament, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, has become a staple of summer youth sports in the region.
A Tradition That Brings Generations Together
Organized by Jared Pomerenke and Angie Toothaker, the event welcomes boys and girls from fourth through eighth grade, drawing teams not only from Martin County but also from neighboring communities such as North Union, United South Central, Blue Earth and even northern Iowa.
The competition follows a round‑robin schedule on four courts, with games kicking off at 4:30 p.m. and beginning half an hour later. After the preliminary matches, first‑, second‑ and third‑place teams receive trophies, while spectators enjoy a family‑friendly atmosphere on modest bleachers.
Parents, grandparents and local fans fill the stands, creating a lively backdrop that underscores the tournament’s community roots. The organizers emphasize that anyone is welcome to attend, regardless of where they live.
Beyond the games, the tournament serves as a gathering point for the county, reinforcing local pride and encouraging healthy competition among young athletes.
