Nathan Hale High School in West Allis, Wisconsin, revealed a sweeping change to its football coaching staff just days before the team was scheduled to begin its 2026 campaign, announcing that several coaches had been placed on administrative leave during a confidential personnel investigation and would later resign.
Administrative leave and resignations
The district disclosed that multiple members of the coaching staff were put on leave while the investigation proceeded, and in the weeks that followed those coaches stepped down, ensuring they will not return for the upcoming season and leaving the program with a vacancy at the head‑coach position.
Cody Schumitsch, a 2015 graduate of Nathan Hale and longtime assistant coach, has been appointed interim head coach. His deep familiarity with the school’s culture and player roster has been cited as a stabilizing factor as the team prepares for competition.
Despite the leadership turnover, school officials emphasized that practices and games will continue under the supervision of qualified staff. The athletic department has confirmed that all scheduled events remain on the calendar while the transition is managed.
Community engagement
To help student‑athletes navigate the disruption, the school has organized a series of support activities, including a parent meeting on August 12 and a team cookout on August 19. These gatherings aim to reinforce morale and maintain a sense of continuity for the players.
