Cheshire Rams Prepare for Another Playoff Push

A deep returning lineup, a quarterback competition and a resilient coaching staff set the tone for the upcoming season.

A Revamped Roster

The Cheshire Rams are poised to build on a strong 2025 campaign that ended with a 9‑4 record and a trip to the Class L final, where they fell to New Canaan. Returning on both sides of the ball, the team brings back seven defensive starters and five offensive starters, giving them continuity heading into the new season.

At the heart of the offense, Michael Chopak will again anchor the rushing attack after leading the team in yards last year. The line features four‑fifths of the same starters from a season ago, including Hunter Hearrin, Alex Muller and Carter Marciano, who together weigh more than 1,100 pounds in the trenches.

The defense, which limited opponents to just 20 points during a crucial four‑game stretch in the second half of the schedule, should remain a strength. Key contributors such as Noel Martinez and sophomore Oliver Donroe add depth to the front seven.

Quarterback is the only major question mark. All‑State quarterback‑linebacker Aiden Gregorich, who starred for the Rams before moving on to the University of New Hampshire, left a vacancy under center. Junior Ryan Plouffe, sophomores Shane Jerome and Nick Masto are battling for the starting role, while returning receivers Tyler Cousino and Luca Jerome and tight end Jacob Trocchi provide experienced targets.

Coach Mike Ciotti, who is battling Stage 4 cancer, remains on staff and continues to guide the team through both on‑field and off‑field challenges. His presence adds a layer of resilience that players say fuels their preparation.

Looking ahead, the Rams face a demanding schedule that includes matchups against last year’s playoff qualifiers and two defending state champions, Hand and Sheehan. Despite the tough slate, Cheshire hopes to extend its streak of state tournament appearances, aiming for a fourth consecutive final.
