The Orlando Solar Bears announced this week that they have re‑signed defenseman Ethan Szmagaj for the upcoming 2026‑27 ECHL season, bringing back a player who already knows the organization's culture and competitive rhythm.
A Familiar Face Returns
Szmagaj first joined the Bears in 2025 after being acquired from the Reading Royals, and in 62 games for both Orlando and Reading he contributed three goals and eleven assists while serving 30 minutes in the penalty box.
Across his ECHL career he has appeared in 66 games for Savannah, Reading and Orlando, accumulating 15 points and a reputation for physical play.
His college years at Arizona State University saw him captain the 2024‑25 team, appearing in 130 games and posting 28 points with 101 penalty minutes, experiences that have shaped his leadership style.
The Bears are an ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning, a relationship that adds a developmental dimension to Szmagaj’s return as the club looks to blend youthful energy with veteran savvy.
Born in Canton, Michigan, the Michigan native will once again wear the orange and black, hoping to translate his collegiate resilience into another productive season on the ice.
