A New Era in the Secondary
Western Carolina University’s defensive secondary for the 2026 season is being reshaped by a hybrid approach that blends traditional cornerback and safety roles with a new ‘spur’ position, a vision led by first‑year coordinator Nick Reveiz.
The scheme leans on a mix of veteran talent and fresh faces. Returning stalwarts such as Marseille Taylor, who logged 12 tackles in 11 games last year, and Ken Moore Jr., a 96‑tackle mainstay over 35 appearances, provide a foundation, while newcomers like Andre Jackson Jr., who earned Freshman All‑America honors with 49 tackles and five pass breakups, add depth.
Versatility is the cornerstone of the unit. Players are expected to shift between man and zone coverage, and the coaching staff, including Malik Chevry who oversees the cornerbacks, has emphasized the ability of true freshmen such as Jermiyah Douglas and Caleb Young Jr. to make early impacts.
The defense will also feature a diverse cast of contributors, from sophomores to first‑year players, each brought in to exploit different matchup advantages. The addition of transfers like Braylon Jones, who arrived from Reinhardt after a 109‑tackle season, further enriches the positional mix.
At the heart of the new look, Ken Moore Jr. will anchor the spur position, leveraging his playmaking instincts to generate turnovers and support the secondary. His development will be closely watched as the unit seeks to translate its schematic flexibility into on‑field disruption.
The season opener, scheduled for August 29 at E.J. Whitmire Stadium, will be marked by special festivities, including a Freshmen Run and a drone light show, setting an energetic tone for the campaign ahead.
