A New Structure for High School Football
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) has officially voted to create a Super 8 football tournament that will debut in the 2027 season. The board of directors approved the measure with a 12‑2 majority, signaling strong support for a new postseason structure that focuses on the top teams from Division 1 and Division 2.
Under the new format, only the highest‑ranked teams in the power rankings will qualify, pushing the postseason field down from 16 to eight squads per division. To accommodate the change, the regular season will gain an additional week, replacing the traditional consolation games that previously concluded the schedule.
Coach John Dubzinski, who leads Central Catholic and previously coached at North Andover, praised the adjustment. He said the revised bracket gives more programs a realistic chance to compete for a state championship and ensures that every team faces well‑coached, disciplined opponents throughout the tournament.
The initiative is framed as a way to elevate competitiveness across the divisions, giving smaller programs a clearer pathway to the championship stage. By tightening the field and extending the schedule, the MIAA hopes to foster a more structured and exciting postseason experience for players, coaches, and fans alike.
